Update on Bella - Japanese Refugee Dog Reunited with family

Bella, a 3-year-old Springer Spaniel, was evacuated from Japan after the March 11 earthquake and subsequent events. Bella traveled by airline crate over 8,400 miles and was hosted by a temporary foster family in Austin.

We're happy to report that Bella's family arrived in Austin to pick up Bella and reunite the family!

Update from Bella's family: They're working with Bella, continuing to teach her to enjoy her crate and to tolerate periods of separation from her family. By consistently reinforcing the crate as a fun place to be by using toys, treats, and soft bedding, Bella is starting to see her crate as her own private den. Her family is also using puzzle/chew toys and Kongs to keep Bella occupied during their absence. Bella has responded well to the philosophy of "a busy dog is a happy dog".

Best of all, we're thrilled to see a family reunited and a happy ending to Bella's travels.

Beat the Heat this Summer! Warm Weather Safety for Dogs

Temperatures in Central Texas have already reached 90F and above. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), pets are more susceptible to heat stroke than humans when it's hot outside. Pets can't sweat like humans do; they perspire through their paw pads and rid themselves of excess heat primarily by panting. It's important, therefore, to protect our pets during hot months.

Some tips to help our canine friends stay safe and healthy during hot days are:

If possible, bring pets inside, and avoid prolonged exposure to high heat and humidity
For pets that must stay outside during the day, ensure they have a shaded and well-ventilated area to stay in throughout the day, as the sun changes position. (Most dog houses trap heat, and aren't a suitable option for shelter on hot days).
Ensure your pet has access to fresh water; keep water bowls in a shaded area
Walk or exercise your dog during the cooler times of day, early morning or very late in the day.
When walking your dog, remember that pavement and sidewalks can become very hot during the Texas summer, and in extreme cases can burn a dog's paws. Avoid or limit exposure to these extremely hot surfaces.
Yes, dogs can become sunburned - depending on the coat of your pet and amount of exposed skin. Apply sunscreen to sensitive areas and/or limit exposure, just as a human would.
Make sure your dog is clean and properly groomed. Dogs with longer hair and thicker coats are able to remain cooler and healthier with the proper grooming and cut during warm months.
Provide a small wading pool, with fresh water, for your dog to cool off. Small pools can be found at Wal-mart, Target, HEB-Plus!, Sears, Toys-R-Us, Petsmart, and other stores.
During warm months, never leave a pet in a car or confined in a hot space. Even with windows cracked open, temperatures inside a car can quickly rise to dangerous levels.
In summer, fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes are more prevalent. Talk to your veterinarian about an appropriate preventative and/or treatment to keep your dog free of these parasites
Short-nosed (brachycephalic) dogs are particularly susceptible to the effects of heat. Watch your dog carefully when exposed to heat if your dog is in this group (e.g., Pug, Bulldog, Japanese Chin, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Bullmastiff, Pekingese, and others).

If your dog is exposed to high temperatures, be alert for signs of heat stress and/or heat stroke:

Excessive/hard panting
Glassy eyes
Rapid heartbeat
Deep red or purple gums
Unsteadiness, disorientation, staggering, stumbling
Lack of responsiveness
Vomiting
Collapse

The AVMA recommends that, if you suspect your pet is suffering heat stroke, put a cool, wet towel around the animal's neck, get them into an air-conditioned car, and take them to a veterinarian for immediate evaluation and treatment.

The Pets Left Behind Japan's Earthquake, Tsunami, and Nuclear Accident...

Veterinarians, vet techs and several animal welfare organizations launched relief efforts after the massive March 11 earthquake and tsunami devastated northern Japan.

Initial efforts included:

Veterinary care for injured animals
Donating food and medical supplies
Deploying search and rescue dogs
According to Veterinary Practice News:

"Every minute counts as the teams work to find people buried beneath the rubble," said Wilma Melville, founder of the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation. "After the Haiti deployment, this is a battle-seasoned group. If there are people still alive in the rubble, the dogs will find them."

Another immediate concern is the number of missing animals and those left behind by owners who have fled the area. This situation could quickly overwhelm local animal shelters.

World Vets, a nonprofit organization that provides veterinary services all over the world is hands-on in Japan after being deployed as a first responder assessment team. The group is coordinating large scale shipments of supplies to help out local animal welfare groups. Some of the supplies coming in include cages, fluid replacements, wound treatments, de-worming medicines and vaccines.

Three local groups formed a coalition called the Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue and Support. The coalition hopes to raise both public awareness and donations through its Facebook page. The three groups forming the coalition include:

HEART-Tokushima
Other organizations lending a hand with rescue teams, donations and other types of support include the Humane Society International, the International Fund for Animal Welfare and the American Veterinary Medical Foundation.

Human medications have topped the list of pet toxins for the third year in a row, according to a new list released by the ASPCA. In 2010, the ASPCA’s 24-hour poison control hotline fielded more than 167,000 phone calls about pets exposed to common household toxins and other potentially poisonous substances.

To help keep your pet safe and sound in 2011, experts from the ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) in Urbana, Illinois, have created a list of the 10 most common poisons that affected our furry friends last year. A few highlights of their findings include:

Accidental ingestion of human medications accounted for 25 percent of all calls to the ASPCA in 2010. The most common culprits included antidepressants and over-the-counter medications, such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen.
Approximately 20 percent of all calls concerned insecticides commonly used for flea control.Our feline friends are especially vulnerable to the misapplication of spot-on flea and tick products.
Baits used to kill mice and rats can be deadly if ingested by pets. Many rodenticides are grain-based, which attracts not only rodents, but dogs and cats, too, and can cause seizures, internal bleeding or kidney failure.
Some of the most delicious people food, including grapes, raisins and garlic, can be poisonous to pets. Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs, while onions and garlic can cause anemia if ingested in sufficient amounts.
Household plants may keep your house green and your air clean, but some can cause serious gastrointestinal problems for companion animals. Please visit our list of pet-safe plants before your next trip to the nursery.

A customer who recently visited Tomlinson's Westlake store told them that she had come very close to losing her two dogs because they had eaten the clippings of a Sago palm that she had cut back. Sago palms are common in the central Texas area and VERY TOXIC. Dogs that ingest them rarely survive! See a photo of a Sago palm and more information here.

The ASPCA has put together an exhaustive list of plants that are toxic to pets - over 700! While looking through them, I began to wonder if there are any safe ones out there. Here is a list of the 10 most common poisonous plants:

Azalea - The toxins in azalea plants can be very severe and potentially cause drooling, diarrhea, vomiting, central nervous system weakening and depression, and in some cases possibly coma or death.
Castor Bean - Poisoning as a result of this plant can cause abdominal pain, drooling, diarrhea, vomiting increased thirst, loss of appetite and weakness. More serious cases could also lead to dehydration, tremors, seizures, twitching muscles, coma and possibly death.
Cyclamen - The most poisonous portion of this plant is located in the root. Ingestion of the plant can cause severe vomiting and gastrointestinal irritation. In some cases death has been reported as a result.
Kalanchoe - Ingestion of this plant can cause gastrointestinal irritation and cardiac rhythm and rate problems.
Lilies - Plants of the lily variety are very poisonous to cats. Even very small amounts of this plant could cause serious kidney damage.
Marijuana - Animals who attempt to snack on this plant can suffer serious consequences such as diarrhea, vomiting, increased heart rate, drooling, in-coordination, and even possibly seizures and coma.
Oleander - All portions of this plant are poisonous and can cause gastrointestinal irritation, hypothermia, heart problems and possibly death.
Sago Palm - While the seeds and nuts of this plant are most poisonous, the entire plant is toxic. Animals ingesting parts of this plant may suffer from diarrhea, vomiting, depression, seizures and liver failure.
Tulips - The toxic portion of this plant is the actual bulb, which can cause drooling, central nervous system depression, gastrointestinal irritation, cardiac issues and convulsions.
Yew - Poisoning as a result of the yew plant can affect the nervous system and cause in-coordination, trembling and breathing difficulties. It may also result in gastrointestinal irritation, cardiac failure and could possibly lead to death.

Airline’s Puppy Deaths Spark Debate about Commercial Breeders

As animal lovers become more aware that purchasing a dog from a pet store supports the inhumane practices of puppy mills, commercial breeders are using online sources to get their dogs directly into homes across the country.

On August 3, seven puppies died of suspected heat-related complications in the cargo hold of a plane en route from Tulsa, OK, to Chicago, IL. The victims were seven of 14 pups transported by the airline, and reportedly came from a commercial breeder in Oklahoma—many of the puppies were booked on connecting flights, making it likely that they were purchased online by buyers in different cities.

“Puppy mill operators are creating professional looking websites that convincingly dupe consumers into thinking they are reputable breeders,” says Cori Menkin, ASPCA Senior Director of Legislative Initiatives. “A sure way to spot a scam is that they often offer to ship the dogs to the buyer without ever meeting in person. No reputable breeder would ever ship a puppy to a buyer sight unseen.”

Buying a puppy over the Internet is just as risky as buying from a pet store—you can’t see the puppy’s breeding premises or meet his parents. Furthermore, those who sell animals online are not held to regulations established by the Animal Welfare Act.

“The Animal Welfare Act requires breeders to be licensed and meet specific minimum standards of care for animals bred for resale, but a loophole allows puppy breeders who sell directly to the public—which includes over the Internet—to go unregulated,” says Menkin. “They are able to keep inspectors away and operate without being accountable to anyone.”

“The bottom line is the only way to be sure your new puppy isn't a product of cruel and inhumane conditions is to see for yourself where he lives—visit the breeder’s facilities and meet the puppy’s parents,” Menkin states. “Or better yet, adopt from your local shelter.”

Help Us Help Kids With Autism!

American Humane desperately needs your help building our Animal-Assisted Therapy Program to address a serious challenge affecting innocent children across the country: autism.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,1 in every 110 kids born in the United States struggles with autism, a developmental disability that often makes communication and interaction with others difficult. These children also face tremendous stress in their daily lives, as they valiantly work to keep up with their peers in the same classrooms.

The good news is therapy animals can help kids with autism cope and connect with others! Our Animal-Assisted Therapy Program brings specially trained teams of animals and human volunteers to a variety of settings, including classrooms that serve kids with disabilities.

Interacting with a friendly, patient therapy animal from time to time is a great way to encourage the development of children with autism -- and relieve stress. Here are just a few examples of how it works:

Children with autism struggle to make eye contact. Practicing this with an animal is less threatening.
Children with autism have trouble forming relationships. Brushing, talking to, praising and playing with a pet can increase empathy.

A Belgian Malinois Inspires a Child With Autism

If you have any doubts about helping more kids with autism through animal-assisted therapy, consider the story of Michael* and Jaxon.

Michael is a second grader with autism. Jaxon is a big-hearted Belgian Malinois who was adopted by Barbara Weiss, an American Humane volunteer and a school system assistant in special education. Every other week, Barbara brings Jaxon to school to provide animal-assisted therapy to Michael and other children.

Communicating is tough for Michael, but he recently surprised everyone by exclaiming, “Jaxon lives with Michael!” He went on to describe how Jaxon was going to sleep on his sofa, and even be carried in Michael’s backpack despite the lovable dog’s huge size!

This display of affection and humor may seem like a small thing. But for Michael, it was a tremendous breakthrough.

New, Improved Crush Act Introduced--Let's Get It Passed!

Earlier this week, the U.S. Supreme Court declared an important federal anti-cruelty law known as the “Crush Act” (18 U.S. Code Section 48) unconstitutional and therefore unenforceable. The Crush Act banned the creation, sale and possession of materials depicting genuine acts of animal cruelty where such acts are illegal. The Court made it clear that its major concern was the broadness of the law’s language, which could make the law applicable in many circumstances not intended by its authors.

While the ASPCA is disappointed with the Court’s decision, we are moving forward! Representative Elton Gallegly of California has acted quickly and introduced a bill to amend the law. H.R. 5092 will make the Crush Act’s language more specific and resolve the over-breadth concerns raised by the Supreme Court.

Passage of H.R. 5092 will help prevent a revitalization of the crush video industry. The original Crush Act was passed with little opposition—help us ensure that this revision passes, too.

Reports of Kennel Cough in the Portland Area on the Rise

I thought I'd give you all a quick heads up - it seems there is a bit of an outbreak of kennel cough here in the Portland area. I got a call last night from the good folks at Doggy Business, letting us know that though they have only received about 4 reports of kennel cough in the last few days from customers, there are a few daycares here in town that have actually closed temporarily to help to slow the spread of the disease. Doggy Business is being vigilant and notifying their customers to ensure that people are watching for signs. Kennel cough, or Bordatella, is a generally mild, though very contageous respiratory illness that can be caused by bacteria, flu-like viruses, or a combination of both. Immunization cannot prevent all occurrences of kennel cough, so even if they've had the immunization, they still could fall ill if interacting with another dog that is shedding the virus. The most obvious symptom is a dry hacking cough, and sometimes some lethargy. In rarer cases it can evolve into pneumonia, so if your dog seems to be getting sicker (poor appetite, listlessnes, or fever), do see a vet.

If it's just a cough, keep them out of the daycares, classes, and parks for a while

To soothe the coughing, we have a tincture called phytomucil that is useful for soothing coughs. Or, you can go to the Whole Foods bulk spice/herb section and pick up either marshmallow root or slippery elm. Bring it home and make a tea from it (a spoonful of root to a big mug of water), let it cool and offer it to your pet. These herbs are both useful for soothing the throat, are very safe and are both kind of sweet, so usually liked by dogs - you could also put in some chicken broth if they won't drink it straight.

I read an interesting thing online that I haven't tried - making a concoction of 8 oz water, 3 drops of hydrogen peroxide, and one teaspoon of honey in warm water. I have no experience with this, but I see lots of testimonials here. The part of it that I like best is the honey, which is both soothing and has antibacterial properties.

Our feline friends are particularly vulnerable to this arresting flower, which can cause kidney failure within 36 to 72 hours of ingestion.

“All lilies belonging to the plant genus Lilium are highly toxic to cats,” explains Dr. Steven Hansen, Senior Vice President, ASPCA Animal Health Services. “Consuming even small amounts can cause a life-threatening situation.” Common lily varieties that are dangerous for cats include the Easter lily, tiger lily, rubrum lily, Japanese show lily and certain species of daylily.

Every Day Is Tag Day™ Kicks Off This Saturday!

It’s a big, scary world out there for cats and dogs who are lost and alone, far from home. Even if you think your pet would never run away, the sad fact is that it can happen to anyone. Millions of dogs and cats are taken to animal shelters as strays each year -- but only about 15 percent of dogs and 2 percent of cats without an ID tag or microchip are reunited with their owners.

American Humane is celebrating Every Day Is Tag Day this Saturday, April 3, to encourage all pet owners to tag and microchip their companion animals.

All cats and dogs need to wear a collar with an ID tagthat includes your name, address, phone numbers and the pet’s name (plus microchip registration number if your pet has been microchipped).
Microchipping provides permanent identification for your pet. Nearly all animal shelters and veterinary clinics routinely scan every animal for the presence of a microchip, which can be matched with owner information in a national database.
With both identification methods, remember to keep your contact information up to date if you move or change your phone number.

Buckle Up!
Dogs love good weather, too! But allowing them to ride in the beds of pick-up trucks or stick their heads out of car windows is downright dangerous. Abrupt stops or turns can cause major injury, or worse! Pets in cars should always be secured in a crate or wearing a seatbelt harness designed especially for them.
Home Improvement 101
Products such as paints, mineral spirits and solvents can be toxic to your pets and cause severe irritation or chemical burns. Carefully read all labels to see if the product is safe to use around your furry friends. It may be wise to confine your dog or cat to a designated pet-friendly room during home improvement projects.
Ah-Ah-Achoo!

Buyer Beware: Puppy Scams Thrive Online

As more and more Americans turn to the Web to find the pet of their dreams, scams have skyrocketed as criminals seek to take advantage of unsuspecting pet parents. According to the Internet Crime Complaint Center, hundreds of complaints are filed each year by victims who were conned when attempting to buy a dog online.

One potential pet parent, Diane, was hoping to add a Yorkshire Terrier puppy to her family when she spotted a classified ad in her local paper. “It was over my morning coffee that I saw the perfect ad for a Yorkie named Nancy,” says Diane, who lives near Cleveland, OH. She sent an email to the address listed, and immediately received a response—Diane could have the puppy if she promised her a loving home and sent $500 to cover the shipping fees.

“I corresponded for an entire week with this man who claimed to be a missionary,” Diane explains. Diane sent the requested payment via Western Union, but once she sent the code for the money transfer, she never heard from the “pastor” again.

Like many trusting animal lovers, Diane fell victim to one of many “free to good home” scams currently circulating the Internet and classified sections of newspapers. So how do you avoid persuasive cons and still get the dog of your dreams? The ASPCA recommends never buying a dog you haven’t met in person and always check references. Also, keep in mind that adoption is still the best option, even if you have your heart set on a purebred dog. There are thousands of dogs waiting for good homes at local animal shelters, including purebreds! Please help others avoid being cheated by emailing your puppy scam story to dogstory@aspca.org.

HeHelp American Humane Care for Homeless, Starving Dogs in Haiti

The tragic loss of life and destruction of Haiti’s infrastructure have been overwhelming. But in the aftermath, American Humane is determined to help.

Our Animal Emergency Services program manager, Tracy Reis, landed in Port-au-Prince today. She has joined our colleagues from the Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti (ARCH) -- a group of professional animal welfare organizations, including American Humane, that is collaborating to help suffering animals in the region. The coalition is led by the World Society for the Protection of Animals and the International Fund for Animal Welfare.

After consulting with Haiti’s minister of environment, Jean Marie Claude Germain, ARCH is helping injured, starving dogs in the city. Tracy and the team are setting up animal feeding stations and providing emergency veterinary care as you read this email.

Is your pooch mad for people food? Does your kitty like to self-medicate? Sadly, not everything we love is good for us. In fact, many common household goods that we take for granted as harmless can poison our furry friends. In 2009, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center in Urbana, IL, handled more than 140,000 cases of pets exposed to toxic household substances, including insecticides, cleaning supplies and prescription medications.

To help you keep your pet safe and sound in 2010, our experts have created a list of the 10 common poisons that most affected our furry friends last year. Here’s a sneak peek at their advice:

Top dishonors—once again—go to human medications, which accounted for the most calls to the ASPCA’s 24-hour poison control hotline in 2009. Pets often snatch pill vials from counters and nightstands or gobble up meds accidentally dropped on the floor. Remember to keep all medications, including pain remedies, antidepressants and decongestants, in a cabinet far away from pets’ prying paws.
Cats and dogs are often the unwitting victims of our efforts to battle flea infestations. The misapplication of spot-on flea and tick products can be especially problematic for our feline friends. Talk to your vet about choosing the right, species-specific flea treatment for your pet and never use products made for dogs on cats, and vice versa.
Some of the most delicious people food—including citrus, avocado and raisins—can be poisonous to pets. Chocolate ingestion accounted for nearly half of all people food-related cases in 2009, so be sure to keep cocoa hidden from your resourceful cat or dog.
Pet parents also need to remember to protect their cats and dogs from common household cleaners such as bleaches, detergents and disinfectants. These products, when inhaled by our furry friends, can cause serious gastrointestinal distress and irritation to the respiratory tract.
Household plants may keep your house green and your air clean, but some can cause serious gastrointestinal problems for companion animals who nibble on them. Check out our toxic plant list before your next visit to the nursery.

Just like people, animals have individual metabolic rates that help regulate

whether they maintain average weight, or become overweight. Some breeds also have

a natural propensity for either a svelte, or heftier shape. As a group, however,

pets face the same problems of weight gain that their owners do. Overeating,

snacks and not getting enough exercise are usually to blame. Dogs and cats are by nature hunters, not grazers. In the same way the human body does, your pet's body is designed to store energy as fat as precaution against lean times. If allowed to eat as much as they want, many pets will consume food as if they were out in the wild hunting, eating as much for as possible, when all
they're actually doing is lying around all day. When we feed them the proper amount of food and exercise them regularly, pets tend not to put on weight.

Training Tip of the Month

Did you know that we indirectly teach our dogs to pull on the leash? When we are out for a walk we often start to cinch up on the leash for more control. Well, that cinch causes pressure on the neck and when pressure is applied to the neck the dog gets endorphins. The more endorphins a dog has, the more it will actually feel good to pull towards an object it wants. The same happens with sled dogs when the harness pulls against the sled.

When your dog pulls towards an object, change directions and that will release the pressure on the neck briefly, once the pressure is released, reward with a cookie at you side, but only if the leash is loose.

Does Lead in Toys Pose a Danger to Pets?

Whether your pet prefers squeaky rubber squirrels, stiff rawhide bones or fuzzy mice, he or she undoubtedly loves to play with toys. But is the source of your dog's or cat’s merriment safe? Many common household products—including toys for children and pets—may contain trace amounts of lead and other toxins. In most cases, however, the levels of these ingredients in toys don’t pose a significant threat to your furry friend.

The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) reviewed 200,000 cases from the past two years and produced no examples of lead poisoning from pet toys. According to Dr. Sharon Gwaltney-Brant, ASPCA Vice President and Medical Director of the APCC, younger dogs, just like children, are especially vulnerable to lead poisoning, but most studies reveal only tiny amounts of lead in pet toys—not a grave risk for acute or chronic lead poisoning in dogs.

“Just because it's 'detectable' doesn't necessarily make it hazardous,” says Dr. Gwaltney-Brant. “Even oxygen is toxic at the right concentration.”

And what about other types of treats such as rawhide bones? Like pet toys, rawhide chews can include trace amounts of pesky chemicals. Dr. Safdar Khan, Director of Toxicology at the ASPCA, believes many dog lovers would be surprised if they learned the true contents of their pets’ treats. But he also adds that pet parents would likely be surprised if they knew the complete ingredients of what they eat and drink, too.

The reality is that a dog is much more likely to suffer obstruction from a rawhide bone than poisoning from a hidden toxin. In general, the smaller the dog, the fewer rawhide treats he should receive, and only give your pet rawhides under a watchful eye. Remember, it’s always wise to supervise!

Loss of Home Leads to Loss of Dogs

Losing their home to foreclosure was the first blow. The prospect of also losing their beloved dogs compounded the pain and worry for the Michigan family of four. Yet they had nowhere to go with Roxie, a 4-year-old pit bull mix, and Monty, a husky mix who, at 11 years old, was in the twilight of her life. The thought of separation at an already traumatic time was heartbreaking.

In desperation, the owners began contacting local shelters and rescue groups, hoping to find a place for the pets they had once promised a “forever home.” Sadly, it felt like the only option for the displaced family that had already lost so much.

Help for Roxie, Monty and Other Animal Victims of Foreclosure

Pets caught in the foreclosure crisis are showing up in droves at the nation’s shelters, relinquished by owners who can no longer afford to care for them or who must seek new living arrangements that do not allow pets. And those are the “lucky” animals; some foreclosed homeowners are simply leaving their pets behind, locked inside deserted homes -- for days or even weeks -- without food or water.

Fortunately for Roxie and Monty, a local shelter agreed to provide them with medical care and -- most importantly -- a temporary home until the family regains its footing and is united once again.

This happy ending for Monty and Roxie wouldn’t be possible without donors like you who provide vital support for American Humane’s Foreclosure Pets Grants.

These grants are awarded to shelters to help offset the cost of boarding, medical care and foster care for animal victims of foreclosure until they can be reclaimed by their owners or welcomed into new, loving homes -- and they are funded entirely by public donations.

Dogs could be joining diners at S.A. eateries

John McClung first noticed it at establishments in Europe and more recently in cities such as Seattle and San Francisco: People were eating on restaurant patios with their dogs.

As co-owner of the North Side restaurant Los Patios, McClung knew it was against state law to do so here.

“But the rules also say that individual municipalities can vary those rules,” said McClung, who's also an attorney, “provided basic health, safety and sanitation are met.”

About a month ago, he brought the idea to City Councilman John Clamp, who was a bit taken aback.

“I said, ‘What? What is that? Are dogs going to have menus?'” Clamp joked.

He quickly came around, and now the city could join Austin and Dallas in mixing its canines and culinary delights. Clamp said Tuesday that council members could approve a dog-friendly restaurant ordinance as early as next month to provide variances from state law.

“It's separate and outdoors, exclusively an outdoor dining variance-type thing,” Clamp said. He emphasized that nonservice animals still wouldn't be allowed inside restaurants. Some restaurants in San Antonio, perhaps in violation of state law, have been allowing dogs at their outdoor dining areas.

McClung, whose 20-acre property embraces a stretch of Salado Creek and an unfinished linear park trail, echoed that provision.

“This is purely paws on the patio,” he said.

The law would require a restaurant owner to seek a variance and pass a health inspection before animals could enter the property, Clamp said.

“I'm saying dog. It may include cats,” he said. “I'm not really an animal expert. I'm not really sure how cats and dogs react to each other.”

The state doesn't weigh in on that, but its Department of State Health Services has a position on why dogs don't mix with dining, according to Deborah Marlow, manager of the Food Establishments Group, an arm of the agency.

“Because of all the diseases that animals can carry on their skin, their feces, on their coat,” she said. “The concern is that food handlers handle the pet and continue on with any kind of food-handling activity.”

McClung said food wouldn't be prepared near animals and that pet owners would be able to reach their tables without going inside.

“A veterinarian friend of mine tells me that the number of flora inside the mouth of a dog is about one-third the number of flora that are inside the human mouth,” he said. “We know that animals are kinder to their own species than people are. Name a dog that's started a war.”

He added that he can't wait to become the first restaurant in the city to allow dogs on its premises — although he might be too late. Apparently, Joseph's Storehouse, among other city eateries, has been allowing dogs on its patio for years.

“I thought it's like smoking,” said Patrick McCurdy, owner of the bakery and restaurant on North St. Mary's Street. “It hadn't even dawned on me that you had to have an ordinance.”

Tax Break for Pet Care Costs

We all want to give our animal companions the best care we possibly can, but it seems that pet care costs are always on the rise—and these days, it’s harder than ever to stretch the family budget. That’s why the ASPCA supports H.R. 3501, which would amend U.S. tax code to allow qualifying pet care expenses, including veterinary care, to be tax-deductible.

This means that when you prepare your income taxes, money you spent on pet care that year would count as non-taxable income—and you can deduct up to $3,500 per year!

Even though the holiday is officially celebrated on September 7, any true pet person will tell you that there are reasons to feel the love for our furry friends every day of the year. Why not curl up with your kitty or scratch your pup under the chin as you read through petcentric’s top ten ways to feel the love for dogs and cats.

1. Play like a pet! Walk your dog around the block or play hide and seek cat games. The exercise will do you both good.
2. Have a heart-to-heart talk. Do you have a talking dog or talking cats in your house? You’re not alone. Studies show that talking to your pet is even more uplifting than talking to another human. And researchers have found that people feel more support from a pet talk than from a talk with a friend or spouse.
3. Banish kitty boredom. Is your cat bored? You’d be surprised at all the fun that’s just waiting to be had by you and your feline friend — right in your own living room! Like the paper bag playground!
4. Hit the road with Rover. But first, have you taught your dog travel etiquette? With a little training, the two of you will be ready for the Great American Road Trip.
5. Pet photography! Why not have a photo shoot at home with your pets? Current photos are always good to have, and pet holiday cards are always a hit. (Your friends and family are sure to feel the love during the holidays when they see pics of your four-legged family members!)
6. Think safety. Is your pet microchipped? Are they up-to-date on their vaccinations? Is your home free of toxic plants and other pet dangers? If you’re not sure, get down on all fours and see things from your pet’s point of view.
7. Make it a double. You know that hanging out with your pet boosts your pet’s mood, but did you know that it can lower your stress level, too? In fact, a recent study shows pets contribute to low blood pressure. So a good time for your pet is, in reality, twice as nice!
8. Sing a song. There’s nothing your pet loves to hear more than your voice calling his name. If you really want his ears to perk up, sing a song using your pet’s name. Don’t worry, you won’t be alone, because 97 percent of pet owners talk to their pets. Even if you’re out of tune, your voice singing his name is sure to be music to his ears.

The Joys and Benefits of Fostering

Editor's Note: Michael and his wife Debby started their fostering career with another rescue organization. They joined ADA a few months ago and have now decided to lead our Adoption Support Team.

Until four years ago, I never thought about fostering. Then we adopted a rescue dog, named Radar (Ray). Ray was roaming the streets at six months and likely would not have survived if not for some dedicated volunteers. My wife wanted to give back to show our appreciation and gratefulness for their saving Ray's life. "OK," I thought, "sounds good to me. He has become a 'Ray of Sunshine' in our life!" So we began to volunteer for the rescue and before you knew it we became fosters.

"OK. What's that mean?," I asked Debby. She told me basically we would be a temporary home for a dog in need, until the rescue was able to locate a "Forever Home." I knew what that meant...Hi Fido! Welcome to your forever home!!! Not interested.

Debby promised not to be a FF-"Foster Failure," where we just keep the dog. She did quite a lot of research and learned just what it took to be a successful foster, not a "foster failure." She told me about the need and I read all about the foster-model and she quickly convinced me to give it a try.

Our first foster dog was named Triscuit. Triscuit turned out to be pretty darn awesome. I was reconsidering this whole FF thing! I mean after all "Foster Failure" is pretty harsh term, I thought. Why not FF-"Foster Found," as in foster found exactly what he was looking for! Certainly Triscuit would be happy here with us! Plus, how could providing a warm loving home to a dog-in-need be a failure?

Debby remained grounded for me and, although she loved Triscuit too, she gently explained to me that if we kept Triscuit we wouldn't be able to help any other doggies in need. I agreed and we found Triscuit a home. AND boy oh boy, did he hit the jackpot...an estate in the hills of Westlake with cooked premium-hamburger for breakfast and his own E-Z lounge chair! I almost wished I was the one being adopted...smiles.

So, personally, while I don't think there are any "foster failures," I do understand that the greatest benefit can be realized by helping as many pups as possible.

Fostering is a terrific option for volunteering, but you do need to be very, very careful to decide up front WHY you are fostering in the first place.

Do you want another dog? OK, great! Then you know going in you are looking for a Foster-to-Adopt situation.

Do you want to help as many orphan dogs find a warm, loving Forever Homes as is possible? OK, awesome! Then you need to know going in that your mission is to help multiple dogs find multiple homes. Now be ready for the really heroic part---parting. It's by making your decision before you begin fostering that you can head-off one of the most difficult challenges in fostering...letting the dog go, not an easy task.

It's impossible not to get emotionally attached to your foster. You wouldn't be reading this newsletter if you didn't care about dogs. So, it's only natural that such a caring person will become emotionally invested in saving a life. And that is precisely what you are doing when you take on the challenge of being a foster. You are saving a dog's life and you are nurturing, loving, and preparing that dog to be adoptable into a forever home.

That is the Joy, the Benefit, the Satisfaction you can get from being a foster to an orphan dog in need of some love and guidance until they become forever members of families with whom they can share their lives.

(CNN) -- A few weeks ago, Tony Hoard, a 57-year-old manufacturing worker in Indiana, boarded a flight on Midwest Airlines to Las Vegas, Nevada, with his Australian Shepherd. The flight attendant smiled at the two and said, "Welcome aboard."

Hoard has flown with Rory, his furry 40-pound companion, in coach more than 15 times on Midwest, the Wisconsin-based airline that boasts "The Best Care in the Air." Each time they fly, Rory wears a harness and sits strapped into a seat.

"Rory gets the window seat," said Hoard, whose dog has won a series of Frisbee competitions. "He likes to look out the window when the plane takes off and naps the rest of the way."

Blame America's pet obsession, but in recent years, more members of the airline industry are embracing dogs and cats on board. Midwest Airlines may be an extreme example, letting select dogs sit in the same seats as humans, but other airlines are relaxing their pet policies by letting smaller cats and dogs come into the cabin area.

About a year ago, Midwest began allowing certain "celebrity" dogs that appear in canine competitions, shows or advertisements to sit in seats.

"They are just passengers with four legs instead of two," said Susan Kerwin, who oversees the pet program at Midwest Airlines.

The pet travel frenzy has spurred the creation of an airline catering exclusively to pets. This month, Pet Airways, the nation's first pet-only airline, will begin flying in five major cities, including New York and Los Angeles, California. It's an alternative to shipping larger pets in the cargo area of a plane, where there have been pet injuries and even deaths. Chart: Compare some of the common airline fees

"The owners can check a bag with them," explained Alyse Tognotti, a spokeswoman for Pet Airways. "Or if they have a special blanket or toy, basically anything that will take stress out of traveling."

On each Pet Airways flight, services include potty breaks and experienced animal handlers checking up on the animals every 15 minutes. Nervous parents can track their pets online.

Southwest Airlines was the latest airline to join the pet-loving bandwagon in May, when it permitted small dogs and cats to travel in the cabin area. The pets must sit in an approved kennel that fits under the seat.

"I wasn't going to fly Southwest Airlines," said Katie Chapman, 37, of Louisville, Kentucky, who is mom to a friendly 18-pound Cairn Terrier that resembles Toto from "The Wizard of Oz." Since the airline has changed its policy, she plans to take her puppy on a Southwest flight to California this fall. "I'm so glad now that she will be able to go with me."

Each year, airlines transport hundreds of thousands of pets in the cargo and cabin areas. Continental reported moving 270,000 pets last year in cabin and cargo, more than triple the number moved before the airline's pet program officially kicked off eight years ago.

The Federal Aviation Administration doesn't have restrictions on whether animals can be in the cabin area, but airlines must allow service dogs for the disabled on board. Only cats and dogs are allowed in the cabin areas on most airlines. In the cargo area, other pets like rabbits, birds and lizards can be stowed.

The cost of flying your furry friend ranges from $75 to nearly $300 each leg. It's a hefty price tag, but profit-bleeding airlines are happy to offer the option.

Pets can even rack up frequent flier miles. After three flights with Midwest, the pet can earn a fourth flight free. Continental and JetBlue Airways' programs credit the pet's trip on the owner's frequent flier account.

But one airline is catering to allergy-ridden customers who don't want pets in the cabin. Last year, Frontier Airlines banned pets from the cabin area because officials said pet allergies are common among their customers.

Ann Kerns, a 63-year-old teacher in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, experienced continuous wheezing on a four-hour US Airways flight to Phoenix, Arizona. At the end of the flight, she was shocked to find that there had been a cat sitting under her seat.

"What would have happened if I went into an attack at 35,000 feet in the air?" she asked.

In 2008, the American College of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology wrote letters to Congress expressing concern about pets riding in the cabin area after some patients became ill from their flights. The letters didn't go very far, officials said.

Airlines say they have had few allergy injuries on board. The airlines limit the number of pets in the cargo area to about five. The aircraft is disinfected and cleaned routinely, so dander and hairs aren't a problem, airline officials say.

But not every traveler has had smooth experiences with pets on board.

Terry Trippler, a travel expert, recalls an unpleasant incident years ago when a dog had diarrhea three rows in front of him.

"You could certainly smell it," he wrote in an e-mail. "The only real way to solve the problem is no pets in the cabin."

Book My Pet

These days you never have to go it alone when planning a trip with your pet, especially if you have a dog. There are plenty of pet travel web sites and resources to help you find pet-friendly lodging, restaurants, attractions and dog parks. If you already know where you want to go, it’s easy to search out the pet-friendly establishments in that area. Or, if you’re looking for a good place to vacation with your pet, you can seek out pet-friendly cities. We’ve selected some favorites in our story, Summer Travels.

One very popular and helpful pet travel resource is DogFriendly.com. They have a web site to help you plan ahead, and dog travel guide books to take with you on the road. This is an excellent site to help you find dog-friendly destinations, even if you’re not sure where you want to go. This site can help you narrow down your choices by what you want to do most. For example, if you know you want to hit the beaches with your dog, you can start by clicking Beach Guide for Dogs. This narrows it down to the states or Canadian provinces that have beaches. Select a state, and find the Dog-Friendly Beach Cities in it. Click a city, and voila – you get links to not only the beaches that allow your furry friend, but also the local hotels, restaurants, attractions, dog parks, events and emergency veterinary clinics.

If you really have no idea where you want to go, you can select the Dog-Friendly City Guides and find cities by state or province. Click a city and find everything doggie.

Another helpful site is PetTravel.com, which has guides for US, Canada and overseas travel. This is very useful if you do know exactly where you want to go. The site offers a lot of travel tips and airline information. You can book your hotel online from this site, and some hotels offered through PetTravel.com provide a Best Rate Guarantee. They also offer a 24-hour toll-free reservation line.

No matter where you go or how you get there, if you have a cell phone, Purina can help you find all the pet-friendly places in any city using go2pets™. With go2pets™, you can enter the city you’re visiting, and find pet-friendly lodging, restaurants, dog parks and more, then get the phone number and directions. (Works great even when you aren’t traveling!) To give it a try, text “pets” to 462411 (carrier charges may apply) or preview the service online at go2pets.com.

Keep in mind as you travel, many cities have pet-friendly hotels- the important thing is to find a city with pet-friendly things to do and see. Most hotels do not allow dogs to be left alone in the room, and pet sitting may not be available.

All pet travel sites offer the same advice – always call ahead to the pet-friendly establishment to make sure their pet friendliness hasn’t changed. Also note that “pet-friendly” means different things to different hotels. Some places merely “allow” pets, and have strict rules. You will have a much more enjoyable stay if the hotel “welcomes” pets, meaning they treat your dog like they are happy to have him as a guest.

When you travel with your dog, make sure you know your doggie Travel Etiquette so everyone has a good experience and you are welcome back the next time!

Panicky Dogs

Quinn, a Rat Terrier/Chihuahua mix was adopted from a caring rescue group at 4 months, and adjusted well to her new family. With her cushy life in her loving new home, she had nothing to fear. Except bananas.

Quinn can sit and watch in fascination as her owner eats a banana. She wants a bite. But, if her owner offers her the banana, by extending it toward her, Quinn bolts out of the room in fear.

One has to wonder if Quinn had an unfortunate run-in with a banana as a pup.

Many dogs have seemingly strange fears, such as of men with moustaches or people wearing hats. Some dogs are fine on carpeted stairs but refuse to walk on wooden ones.

There’s no way to know how a dog processes what he encounters, but we can be sure they don’t see things the same way we do. It’s unlikely a dog sees a vacuum cleaner as a cleaning device. To some dogs, it’s a toy to chase or it’s something annoying to ignore. To others, it’s a noisy, scary thing scooting about that doesn’t heed his warning to stop. And it’s attached to his owner’s hand – is it hurting her? To some dogs, the vacuum cleaner is a dangerous intruder.

But some fears run deeper, and are actual phobias. The most common phobia in dogs is of noise, especially fireworks and thunderstorms. Many dogs express concern over these noises, but the truly phobic dog may go berserk. The phobic dog may jump out a window, chew through doors or walls, run away – anything to escape the noise.

Ironically, it’s the most loving owners that do exactly the wrong thing for their fearful dogs. The caring owner runs over and comforts the dog when he starts panicking. This just confirms to the dog that yes, this is something to fear, and the reward for panicking is love and affection. Next time there’s a clap of thunder, the dog will again panic. Comforting the dog makes the owner feel better, but it doesn’t help the dog.

According to Cesar Millan of National Geographic Channel’s The Dog Whisperer, in his book, Cesar’s Way, “Love is not meant to enhance instability. Love is meant to reward stability, to take us to a higher level of communication.” He goes on to say, of course you should love your dog at all times, but show affection at appropriate times. Withhold affection when your dog is behaving inappropriately.

A better response to fear is to remain calm yourself and let your dog see that there is nothing to be afraid of. Speak to him gently; offer a command such as “come” or “sit.” Distract him with a toy. Let him see that this thunderstorm is no big deal and you’re all going to get through it just fine. Cesar Millan says that when your dog is afraid, he needs leadership.

While many doggie fears and phobias can be dealt with by your own calm reaction, some dogs will need the help of a behavior expert or even medication.

As for Quinn, the banana-fearing dog, her owner continued to casually offer her a banana whenever she sat and watched her eat one. While bananas may always give her “the willies,” she can now remain composed, and simply turn her head away from it.

Letter From the Executive Director

Friends and Supporters,

The Center has been open for three months now and life is finally starting to return to a normal cadence. Our Puppy and Pet Dog Manners classes are filling up each time and everyone that attends classes seems happy and content. We are slowly but surely developing a volunteer base to help with running the center and we have even stocked our pet boutique with some high quality and durable toys and leashes.

Now that everything is fairly under control, our Board has started to focus once again on outreach activities that fit our mission of Making Dogs a Part of the Community. In April we hosted two free community events – our Grand Opening Party and a Bow Wow Reading Dog celebration. Our publicity for the Reading Dog event has lead to requests for more Bow Wow Reading Dog teams at local libraries and schools. Now we just need to train more teams so that we can meet the demand! We have also started to plan for the expansion of our after school programs for the deaf community.

Our Rescue team is going to host a meeting of all Austin area rescue groups on Friday, May 8. We have long held the belief that by working in cooperation with all rescue groups, we can achieve greater success in reducing the number of dogs (and cats) euthanized in our area shelters. We are quite delighted that the Center can be used to further the achievements of all rescue groups in our area.

So although funding is still needed and still an issue for us, we are making progress towards reaching a sustainable model that will allow us to rescue more dogs; train, place and support more pet therapy teams; expand our program offerings for the deaf community; and, provide more community events and activities.

These past few months, while they have been a whirlwind and I have never worked harder in my life, have provided me the opportunity to work with some truly amazing and dedicated volunteers who have so much to give to our community. We are now positioned to increase our presence in the community.

I feel blessed and honored everyday to be a part of this organization.

Together, we are making a difference.

Crack Down on Puppy Mills in California

Hi Kathleen,

Assemblyman Pedro Nava recently introduced a bill to crack down on puppy mills in California. Called the Responsible Breeder Act of 2009, the new legislation would prevent the inherent cruelty associated with mass breeding of dogs.

Act today to improve the treatment of dogs in California. »

Specifically, the bill would limit the number of intact -- not spayed or neutered -- dogs or cats a breeder can maintain to 50 animals, while creating exceptions for shelters, veterinary facilities and the like. The bill is patterned on laws that passed last year in Virginia and Louisiana.

Let's help add California to this list of states that protect dogs in puppy mills and encourage responsible breeding practices. Contact legislators in California and ask them to support AB 241, the Responsible Breeder Act of 2009. »

Warning Cocoa Mulch

Over the weekend the doting owner of two young
lab mixes purchased Cocoa

Mulch from Target to use in their garden. They
loved the way it smelled

and it was advertised to keep cats away from
their garden. Their dog

Calypso decided that the mulch smelled good
enough to eat and devoured a

large helping. She vomited a few times which
was typical when she eats

something new but wasn't acting lethargic in
any way. The next day, Mom

woke up and took Calypso out for her morning
walk . Half way through the
walk, she had a seizure and died
instantly.

Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on
the label, upon further

investigation on the company's website, this
product is HIGHLY toxic to

dogs and cats.

Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey's, and
they claim that 'It is

true that studies have shown that 50% of the
dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch

can suffer physical harm to a variety of
degrees (depending on each

individual dog). However, 98% of all dogs won't
eat it.'

information:

Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot,
Foreman's Garden Supply and

other Garden supply stores, contains a lethal
ingredient called '

Theobromine'. It is lethal to dogs and cats. It
smells like chocolate

and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest
this stuff and die.

Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3
weeks. Theobromine is in

all chocolate, especially dark or baker's
chocolate which is toxic to

dogs. Cocoa bean shells contain potentially
toxic quantities of

theobromine, a xanthine compound similar in
effects to caffeine and

theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal
quantity of garden mulch made

from cacao bean shells developed severe
convulsions and died 17 hours

later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the
ingested cacao bean

shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts
of theobromine.

Friends and Supporters,
It is with great pleasure that Austin Dog Alliance announces the opening of a Training and Adoption Center on Valentine’s Day, Saturday, February 14. Yes, you read that correctly. We are opening a Training and Adoption center. As many of you are aware, Austin Dog Alliance has been pursuing and planning for this since its inception in 2006. The 2300 sq foot facility is located at the South West corner of RR 620 and Lake Creek Parkway in North Austin. It is in the plaza behind Dairy Queen. The space features a wide open room, wood floors and mirrors on several walls. A Training and Adoption Center will provide us with so many opportunities. Not only will the Center give us a location to hold fun classes and events, it will also provide us with the opportunity to: rescue and find homes for more dogs train more dog owners on how to teach their dog manners – hopefully keeping more dogs out of the shelters train, evaluate and deploy more pet therapy teams in hospitals and nursing homes support the activities of all rescue groups in Austin increase our K9 Kid programs expand our offerings to the deaf community expand our Bow Wow Reading Dog program into more schools
The Center will be staffed by a team of dog trainers with many, many years of combined experience. All training will employ positive training methods and the emphasis will be on enjoying your dog. Volunteers will continue to play a key role in our organization. In fact, volunteers will be essential to our continued success in reaching out to the community and rescuing dogs from kill shelters. This is a big step. It’s a big step for Austin Dog Alliance and a big step for me personally. The small non-profit group that rescues dogs and helps to place pet therapy teams is now a full scale business with a monthly obligation for rent payments, a team of over 200 volunteers and a staff of trainers. Exciting – YES! A bit scary at times – yes. I can’t do this alone – I need all of you to make it a success. So grab your leash and come join me. Together, we CAN make a difference. Sincerely,

Find the new dog or puppy of your dreams at our first Meet and Greet. Most of our adoptable dogs and puppies will be available to meet you. Saturday, February 14 from 1 – 3 FREE – cookies and punch will be served. No reservations required. An approved application is required to adopt, but everyone is welcome to come and meet the pups.

Rest In Peace Sookie

On Feb 3, 2009 Sookie Stackhouse de la Garza passed away peacefully in the privacy of her home with her beloved daddy, Scott. Sookie was only 4and 1/2 mo. old and had an incurable intestinal virus that within a matter of days took the life from this sweet puppy. Sookie was known for living the life of a Vampire, eating in the middle of the night. She liked to act like a parot and sit on the back of the couch right above your shoulder and next to your face. Electric cords and plates of food had no chance when Sookie was around. She was a sweet puppy with sharp vampire teeth (how she got her name) and her two favorite toys she brought everywhere, snowman and teddy. On June 22, 2008 , my 10-year old lab mix, Chai, sustained a severe injury from a product that the company Four Paws, Inc., produces. The toy I'm referencing is the pimple ball with bell (Item #20227-001, U PC Cod e #0 4566320227 9).

While chewing on the toy, a vacuum was created and it effectively sucked his tongue into the hole in the ball. From speaking with my vet , this likely occurred because there is not a second hole in the ball preventing the vacuum effect from happening. I became aware of this when Chai approached a friend at my home whimpering with the ball in his mouth. She tried unsuccessfully to remove the ball but the tongue had swollen and could not be released.

Chai was taken to the Animal Medical Center (an emergency care facility in New York City ) and was treated by Dr. Nicole Spurlock to have the ball removed.. Because the size of the opening on the ball was so small, all circulation to his tongue was cut off. The doctors had to sedate him in order to remove it. Once the ball was removed, his tongue swelled to the point that he could no longer put it in his mouth . Chai was sent home with care instructions and to be observed overnight for any changes.

By the following morning, Chai's tongue had swollen even more.

He was taken to his regular vet , Dr. Timnah Lee, for treatment. He was admitted and kept sedated for a period of three days during which time they were treating his wounds and waiting to determine how much of his tongue could be saved. On June 26, 2008 , Chai had his tongue amputated.

He was kept in after-care for an additional three days. On Sunday, June 29th, I brought Chai home from the vet with a barrage of home care instructions, to last for an additional 7 days. His next visit was to have his mouth re-examined and have the feeding tube in his neck removed.

On the way home from the vet we stopped at Pet land Discount where I purchased their product to speak to the manager on duty.. Upon meeting Chai and seeing his condition, he removed all of the balls in question from the shelves. He also gave me the customer service number to their corporate headquarters to request that they refuse to continue purchasing all Four Paws products, but I have not called them as of yet ..

Additionally, I shared my story with friends who have a French Bulldog named Petunia. Upon hearing my story, their eyes widened. They explained that the same thing happened twice in one night with a smaller version of the same ball to their dog. Fortunately, they were able to pull it off before the tongue swelled, but not withou t tremendous effort and pain to the dog. They recalled how horrific it was to hear their dog screaming while they had to pry the ball from her tongue.

To date, my veterinary bills total over $5,000 and I will have regular follow up appointments for some time. Additionally, Chai now requires a much more expensive form of food because of this injury, averaging approximately $200 per month.

Additionally, I now have to re-teach my dog to eat, drink and adjust to life without his tongue. Feeding him takes me about 90 minutes twice a day and for at least this first week he is not to be unattended for more than 20 minutes at a time.

I sent this information along with the reference to the French Bulldog to Four Paws, Inc., and it is their position that there just aren't enough instances to do anything about this. I Told their insurance company's case manager that was not a good enough excuse. It was inferred that my dogs value wasn' t much and that his pain and suffering don't count as he is just a piece of property.

Training Tip: Go Out There

This one is fun, just fun. Show off for your friends. Useful when you need your dog to step away from you for any reason at all.

You will need yummy treats. Or a toy. Balls are perfect. Wet treats don't work. I will explain the trick with treats.

Give three treats: One, two, three. You have your dog's attention.
Toss a treat 3 feet away from you. Say "Go out there". Your dog will go get it and come back. Toss another treat 4 feet away. Say "Go out there". Your dog will go get it and come back. Toss a treat 6 feet. Say "Go out there". When your dog gets to the treat, eats it, and turns to start back to you, toss another treat out there. Say "Go out there" and keep tossing treats. Your dog will go out there and stay out there. Praise and run to your dog for some fun playing time.

Next time same thing but stop tossing a treat so often when your dog is "out there". Give them a chance to stay on their own.

Tilli is great at this trick. We use a ball with her. "Go out there" and she runs to where we point. Then we throw the ball. We love this game.

(Use clicker training for fastest results. Please make sure that you read a clicker training book or watch a DVD before starting clicker training. You will create bad behavior as quickly as good if you don't know what you're doing.)

Ten Things to Never Feed your Dog

In addition to what is listed below, there are several things you should stay away from despite the fact that they are in certain dog foods, while it will not kill a dog, over a period of time this can cause deterioration in your pet's health. Those ingredients are:

Wheat, eggs, soy, sugar, food or treats with lots of dyes

Did you know there are things that you should never feed your cat or dog? This useful article, written by Dr. Karen Halligan is essential reading for all cat and dog owners.

"Having worked in emergency for numerous years, I have seen pets given all kinds of foods and drinks. An easy rule of thumb, if it isn't particularly healthy for you, it most likely is not good for your cat or dog. Some pets will eat almost anything, so pet owners need to be careful or they could end up in the local emergency room. The following are ten bad things to give your pets.

1. Make no bones about it -- bones are bad for animals! Every year countless numbers of animals end up in the emergency room from being given bones by their owners, usually as a treat.

The fact is that dogs are omnivores, not carnivores and most dogs and cats cannot tolerate bones. They can splinter or lodge in the intestinal tract with disastrous results, usually requiring surgery. They can also get stuck in their mouth or throat, which is just as dangerous. All bones are bad, including pork, chicken and beef. The next time you feel the urge to give your dog a bone, just make sure it's a milk bone or a nylabone. Your pet will love you for it.

2. Chocolate can be lethal to pets because it contains theobromine, which causes increased heart rate, central nervous system stimulation and constriction of arteries. Clinical symptoms range from vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, and excitability to cardiac failure, seizures and death. This can occur as quickly as four to six hours after ingestion. Baking chocolate is the worst because it contains the highest amount of theobromine.

A potential lethal dose is only one pound of chocolate in a 16-pound dog. If your pet has gotten into chocolate you should contact your veterinarian immediately.

3. Alcohol is also very bad for cats and dogs. It doesn't take much alcohol to intoxicate a pet. Animals will stagger and bump into things, hurting themselves, and it also causes them to urinate uncontrollably.

In high doses, alcohol will suppress the central nervous, respiratory and cardiac systems and can lead to death. It is best to just give your pet water.

4. Milk is also not good for animals because many of them are lactose intolerant and will develop diarrhea. Pets often lack the enzyme that is required to break down the sugar in milk and this can cause them to develop vomiting, diarrhea and other gastrointestinal symptoms.

Even though they like it, especially cats, refrain from giving your pets milk.

5. Ham and other salty meats and foods are very dangerous to pets. In addition to being high in fat, they are also very salty which can cause serious stomach ache or pancreatitis. Also, large breeds of dogs that eat salty food may drink too much water and develop a life-threatening condition called "bloat." This is where the stomach fills up with gas and within several hours may twist, causing the pet to die. Please avoid giving ham and salty foods to your pets.

6. Onions are toxic to pets. They contain allyl propyl disulfide, which damages their red blood cells and can cause fatal consequences in animals. They may become anemic, weak and have trouble breathing. The best thing to do if your pet ingests onions is to get them to the vet right away.

7. Caffeine is also bad for pets. It contains methylated xanthine that, like chocolate, stimulates the central nervous and cardiac systems and within several hours can cause vomiting, restlessness, heart palpitations and even death. So make sure your pets stay away from that early morning brew.

8. Avocados are also bad for pets. First, they are really high in fat and can cause stomach upset, vomiting and even pancreatitis. Second, the pit is also toxic and can get lodged in the intestinal tract leading to a severe blockage, which may require surgery.

9. contrary to popular belief tuna fish is bad for cats, but OK for dogs. The feline heart muscle requires an amino acid called taurine to maintain normal strength and function. Regular tuna fish for humans does not have this amino acid and cats that eat too much tuna fish will develop heart problems. If you want to give your cats that taste of tuna that they love, just make sure it is tuna fish for cats which has this amino acid added. You can feed your dogs tuna in moderation or mixed with dog food.

10. The latest study has found that raisins and grapes can lead to kidney failure in pets. Small dogs can also choke on grapes so it is best to just make sure that your pets eat a well-balanced diet that is formulated for their life stage.

Dog Friendly Sushi Rolls (Cucumber)

I love cucumbers and this is one of my new favorite Treats, although we always cut out the Mayo part, (yuck) and my mom serves it with real wasabi, and no soy sauce, which is just a root, and completely ok for dogs to eat. If you don't know the difference between real wasabi and what you probably get when you go out, check this out. Once you have the real stuff you will never go back.

CUCUMBER ROLL RECIPE
For a refreshing departure from the sushi-in-seaweed theme, try wrapping your rice roll in cucumber!

Begin By Making The Rice
Often, up to 80% of product consumed during a sushi meal is rice. Getting your sushi rice right is a crucial element in successful sushi making at home. Follow our recipe for perfect sushi rice.

Prepare The Wraps
Cutting a good cucumber wrap is a bit tricky, but don't be daunted - it just takes a bit of practice to get it right.

Begin by cutting the ends off a straight, evenly shaped cucumber. Peel the cucumber and slice it horizontally to make two cylindrical halves. To make a thin, nori-like sheet, hold a cucumber half against an 8-inch knife and carefully make a spiralling cut along the outside of the cucumber. For a visual aid, imagine you're trying to peel the skin from an apple from top to bottom in one piece.

Toss away any lingering seeds, and voila, you now have your very own cucumber wrapper. If you'd prefer a shortcut, you can just scoop out the insides of the cucumber halves, leaving a thin skin into which you can stuff the rest of your ingredients. If you prefer this alternative, finish by dividing your stuffed roll into bite-sized segments.

Ready To Roll
If you're feeling up to the adventure of actually rolling the cucumber around the rice, start by placing a cucumber wrapper on a bamboo mat (makisu).

The wrapper should form a 5 inch sheet and lay relatively flat. Cover the cucumber with an evenly spread layer of rice. About 2 tablespoons is a good amount. Add some wasabi and Japanese mayonnaise to taste.

Place the rest of your ingredients in the centre of the wrap. With the help of the makisu, roll the cucumber until its edges overlap slightly. This will allow the rice of the top layer to stick to the bottom one.

Slice & Serve
Slice the roll in half and then slice those again in halves to produce 4 pieces. And there you have it - perfect cucumber rolls!
